Other reviews already spell out all the specifics of who is playing and what they do, so I won't be redundent. Each song offers something different in sound and flavor. The sound is a blend of string and wind instruments without drums.
It is totally unique. They agree, it is a great album and there is no other album like it. There is only one album like this ever recorded.
When ever I am asked to name some of my favorite albums this is always the first on the list. If you like to listen to great live moments in musical history then you need to add this to your collection and no collection of Rock, Blues or Jazz is complete until this album is added to said collection. I have explored records and musicians.

The blues jazz fushion is awesome. From start to finish this alblum gets me moving.
Ahhhh, yes. back in the day. The recording quality makes you think it was done in a studio, but believe me this is how they sounded LIVE.

I saw Mayall perform this album on his tour the same year this was recorded live and despite the effects of the hash I smoked and the excitement of the tiny little beauty who sat atop my shoulders the whole show in order to see over the crowd, I was mesmerized.
the quality is great and the songs still sound as good as they did on first hearing. good to hear again after all these years.
Unfortunately this was not one of them if you are like me when it comes to John Mayall this is one you should have in your collection. This album is so different from John Mayall other albums it the first of his groups without a drummer but it is such a great sound my favorite track is California but the whole album is very good. Some of John best music was produced in this period, he is always experimenting with different combinations I was so lucky to see some of his line ups over the years.
